What exactly is pride? Is it a good feeling for something one has done? Or because one belongs to a group that one finds better than others? Or is it because one possesses something valuable, that came from labor, heritage or winning the lottery? It's hard to say and so I did a little research into what the ancient sages say about pride. Surprising to you maybe, read here the comments of the wise: Pride is a prison. Pride ends on the dung hill. Nothing is more dangerous for a poor man than pride. The proud are petulant and the petulant are foolish. God does not listen to the prayers of the proud. Concerning the man of pride God has said? “I and he cannot abide together”. ( Talmud, Sotab 55) A proud man never praises anyone. (Zohar) When pride cometh, then cometh shame; but with the lowly is wisdom.(Book of proverbs 11:2) Pride is a reservoir of sin. ( Sirach, Eclesiasticus 10) The proud man cannot humble himself to learn wisdom. (Gaon) There you go, on pride. So whenever I feel a little proud of having the Dutch nationality, after all, Holland does not have any enemies like the USA, I feel also shame to be of a nation that long used slavery, that exploited Indonesia and installed apartheid. Americans may feel proud of being part of the mightiest military nation of the world, if they also are ashamed for having stolen their country from the native inhabitants, waged war almost continuously world wide, but never at home, have more people in jails than any other nation and have more than 15 percent of the population illiterates...Have a very nice day, and just feel good.
